What 100% Permanent and Total Really Means
100% Permanent and Total (P&T) means the VA considers your service-connected conditions total AND not expected to improve. It unlocks:
- Protection against routine future exams (no more 'reduction' anxiety).
- CHAMPVA health coverage for your spouse and eligible children.
- Chapter 35 education benefits for dependents.
- State benefits: property tax exemptions, tuition waivers, DMV, license plates (varies by state).
- Access to certain VA vocational and independence programs.
P&T is not automatic at 100%. You have to be scheduled 'permanent' by the VA, usually because your rating letter explicitly says 'permanent' or 'no future exam is scheduled.' If your 100% letter doesn't say permanent, you can request it.
